The History of the Limousine
Saturday, March 6th, 2010The limousine has been offering luxurious and an elegant mode of travel since early days of 1700’s.
The word “limousine” comes from the days when professional drivers were required to manage the steam engines, before the 20th century. It also comes from the Limousine region of France, where extra-large and hooded items of clothing were used by the shepherds for the protection from weather. Later on such type of clothing was used by the drivers of automobiles in their cockpit, while their master rode in comfort in back seats. It started with a Sedan chair and then reached to the today’s new version of the Limousine.
A company named Armbruster first created the “stretch Limousine” in Forth Smith, Arkansas in the United States of America which left behind the old fashioned Sedan chairs and carriages. The early limousines were known as “big band buses” because the cars were mostly used to transport leaders and orchestras along with their equipment across the US. Another type of limousine which was called Airporter Stretch Coach was used by hotels throughout America to transport their guests from hotels to their homes, this was the time between 1930’s and 40’s. the limousines were also famous among the Hollywood actors and actresses and must have been used by them also, and also to transport the movie crew and different personnel.
The Armbruster then became Armbruster-Stageway Coachbuilders in 1962 when it merged with another company form Ohio, USA known as Stageway Coaches. The mission statement of the company was to move people from place to place from, only in large cars. The first ever six-door limousine was built in 1974 on a Cadillac skeleton.
